South Africa Gateway is written, designed and published by me, Mary Alexander.
The site tells the stories of South Africa and the rest of Africa in essays, data, graphics and animation.
It researches information on South Africa and Africa as a whole using dependable data from continental and global statistical agencies.
Some facts aren’t great. Some are better than you’d think.
But no country is understood by its government, its GDP or its global ranking in this or that. South Africa Gateway also celebrates the history, culture and people of Africa.
Fact checking
There’s also fact checking. False information can harmfully influence people’s decisions about health, money, voting and other important aspects of life.
My fact checks are written in plain language for a global audience that may be unfamiliar with localisms. Read them here.

About Mary Alexander
I have more than 30 years of publishing experience, in interchanging roles: editor, subeditor, writer, researcher, designer, project manager and website manager. I also develop editorial style guides suited to specific organisations and newsrooms.
My major interests are giving the world a more accurate view of South Africa and the rest of the continent, as well as the modern and ancient history of Africa. Universal human rights inform my work.
